Are You Experiencing One Of These Common Toilet Problems?

The Dreaded Toilet Clog:

When water is not flushing from your toilet as it should there could be a number of reasons why. Maybe a child has tried to flush a toy or other similar object down the toilet. Sometimes family members or even guests are the culprits. Sanitary wipes or pads should never be disposed of in a toilet. Paper towels are another big no-no. Even if an item has been marked as flushable it is best to avoid placing it in the toilet. Toilets should only be used for their intended purpose which is the sanitary removal of feces and tissue paper.

Bowl Refills On Its Own:

When you haven’t flushed your toilet but you hear a refilling sound it can sometimes mean that your toilet has lost water either externally or internally. If no water appears on the floor surrounding the toilet then the leak is happening internally. Common reasons for this include a damaged flapper or a refill tube that has not been installed correctly and has been inserted too far into the overflow pipe. If you hear your plumber use the phrase “phantom flush” this is what they are referring to. Sometimes the problem is a simple fix and sometimes the entire flush needs to be replaced.

Air Bubbles In Toilet:

If air bubbles appear in your bowl even though you have not flushed the toilet this could be a problem caused by a clog or a faulty vent. The vent ensures equalizing of pressure in the drain so that water will flow properly. The bubbling could be the result of the vent not working properly or the P-trap is blocked by some object. A plunger can be used to unblock the obstruction or a plumbing snake can be enlisted if the problem is a blocked vent. If neither of these solutions solves the issue the problem might be in an area such as a wall that requires the expertise of a plumber.

Sluggish Flush:

In homes that have a septic system, a blocked leach field is the main reason toilets experience a slow-moving flush.  This occurs because the water can not percolate as it needs to. However, even in homes without a septic system, a sluggish flush can occur when there is a clog or when your tank has not filled properly with enough water for the toilet to flush successfully. If there is no blockage and the tank is full of water then you may need to have your leach field cleaned. Once it has been cleaned maintenance of your septic system will keep it working properly and avoid future issues.

Toilet Rock & Roll:

If your toilet moves back and forth when you sit down on it you need to get it fixed even if no other problems seem to be present such as water on the floor. Toilet movement usually means the toilet is not resting securely against the floor. Your toilet is connected to the drainpipe by a flange. If the flange is not even with the floor this could cause wobbling. Another possible cause could be the house or floor settling which would cause the toilet to not set properly.  A simple fix might be to tighten the flange bolts so first check to see if they are loose. Be careful and don’t overtighten as to not crack or break the toilet which can lead to way more serious problems. If the bolts are tight look at the base of the toilet. If any gaps are present placing a shim or shims at certain locations should allow the toilet to rest solidly on the floor.

Toilet Water Level:

The water level in the toilet bowl can be an indication of problems. If the water level is too high this means a clog is present and needs to be taken care of. If the water level is too low it could be an indication of any number of problems.  In a toilet that is working normally, the height of the outlet of the internal p-trap will determine the water level.
