Five Common Wichita Home Kitchen Myths

Wichita Home Owners. Do You believe the following is true?

Lemons Are A Great Way To Clean Your Garbage Disposal.

Not True:  Lemons will not clean your garbage disposal but some common household items will. After flushing your garbage disposal with hot water for a couple of minutes pour two cups of ice and one cup of salt into your disposal. This combination will work to remove sludge and other debris from the inside of your disposal.

Always Rinse Plates Before Placing Them In The Dishwasher.

Again Not True: Dishwashers have improved greatly, especially in the last fifteen years. Many current dishwashers have a soil-sensing mechanism that helps determine how dirty the contents are. this not only helps in getting dishes and other items cleaner it also saves energy. After removing any large items of food that may be stuck to the dishes place them in the dishwasher and let it do its dirty work so to speak.

Use Baking Soda To Freshen Your Drains.

True:

Baking soda is a great product to use to eliminate smelly odors. It will also improve the efficiency of your drains.  Food particles, as well as soap used in cleaning, can leave some nasty smells that work their way back up through your drain which can, in turn, lead to some very nasty smells in your kitchen. After sprinkling baking soda into your drain, wait a couple of hours, pour a cup of hot water or vinegar down the drain, and run the tap for a couple of minutes. This will freshen your drain and clear it out without you having to resort to expensive and toxic drain cleaners.

Washing dishes by hand saves water versus using a dishwasher.

Not True:

Modern dishwashers save on average up to 5000 gallons of water a year compared to the old-fashioned method of hand washing dishes. Add in the fact that the water used in a dishwasher is much hotter than water used in hand washing dishes and you have not only cleaner dishes but also a cost-saving with less water use. Plus no more dishwater hands.

A Slow Drip Drip Drip From A Leaky Faucet Is No Big Deal.

No So:

A leaky faucet can waste hundreds if not thousands of gallons over time if not fixed properly. And because faucets are some of the most used items in a home they are more prone to wear out quicker. Water is becoming more expensive every year so a small repair bill now can save you hundreds of dollars in the long run. Plus it is just good stewardship of the earth to conserve as much water as we can.
